Fans of the 2016 BET Awards were in for a huge surprise last night when Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar shocked the audience by opening the BET Awards with their powerful anthem “Freedom” from Queen B’s album Lemonade.
The performance opened with a voiceover from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech and concluded with Beyoncé and Kendrick splashing around in a pool of water. Besides the water, the stunning performance also included smoke and sparks that nearly looked like molten lava. It was a heighten version of the performance that Bey gives on her FORMATION tour.
After the performance,Beyoncé took home awards for Best Video of the Year for “Formation”, the BET Centric Award for “Formation”, and the award for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist.
