Swift was collecting her first-ever VMA — the Best Female Video prize for “You Belong with Me” — when West stormed the stage to protest the honor and proclaim it belonged to Beyonce.
The outspoken star grabbed the microphone from a shocked Swift and declared, “Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’m gonna let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time.”
The rapper, who had earlier in the night been photographed sipping brandy, was reportedly ushered out of New York’s Radio City Music Hall by MTV executives after the incident.
But he later took to his official blog to explain his outburst, writing: “I’m sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers! I’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment! Beyonce’s video was the best of this decade!!!!
“I’m sorry to my fans if I let you guys down!!!! I’m sorry to my friends at mtv. I will apologize to Taylor 2mrw (tomorrow). Welcome to the real world!!!! Everybody wanna booooo me but I’m a fan of real pop culture!!!… I’m still happy for Taylor!!!!… I really feel bad for Taylor and I’m sincerely sorry!!! Much respect!!!!!”
Swift told reporters after the ceremony that she deliberately avoided confronting West — and thanked Beyonce for calling her back onstage after the incident.
She says, “I don’t know him and I don’t want to start anything. I thought that I couldn’t love Beyonce more than tonight and then that happened. They told me to stand by the side of the stage and I didn’t really know what was going to go down, but I thought it was so wonderful and gracious of her.”
