Wonder Woman has been a symbol of female strength for decades — and she’s been having quite the year. Recently, the comic book character officially “came out” as queer (the famous heroine’s writer let us know she’s bisexual). Now, she’s being inducted into the United Nations as the UN Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls.
Wonder Woman will be sworn in on October 21 as part of an event celebrating the characters 75th anniversary and a new UN initiative. The global campaign will launch to support one of the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals. The fifth goal is to end discrimination against women everywhere and empower all women and girls.
October 21st will be dubbed Wonder Woman Day. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson and a few surprise guests will be in attendance (most likely one or some of the actors who played the character).
If we have any guess of what special guests might be in attendance, our bets go to Lynda Carter, who played the character on TV from 1975 to 1979. She was invited to the induction ceremony and said, “to honor Wonder Woman and women all over the world is just amazing.”
In addition to being inducted as an honorary UN ambassador, the United States Postal Service revealed four new Forever stamps featuring Wonder Woman.
This might not be a huge step forward when it comes to equality, but to have a female LGBTQ character celebrated on a global level is a massive win.
