Ziegfeld Follies star Travis dies

Travis passed away on Tuesday (11May10), but no further details of her death were released as WENN went to press.

The veteran star shot to prominence dancing in the Ziegfeld Follies series of Broadway theatrical productions – which were famed for their elaborate costumes and spectacular routines – in the early 1900s.

She went on to appear in a string of silent movies throughout the 1920s and 1930s, as well as numerous appearances on Broadway.

Travis is also credited with performing the song Singin’ In the Rain for the first time at a revue in Los Angeles in 1929. The song later became well known as the title track for Gene Kelly’s 1952 musical of the same name.

She made her last public performance in 1997 at the age of 101, dancing with four other Ziegfeld Follies stars for the reopening of the New York’s New Amsterdam Theatre, where she made her stage debut 80 years earlier.

Broadway theatres will dim their lights on Wednesday evening (12May10) in honour of the veteran performer.
