Biography

Long before Anna Nicole Smith or Kim Kardashian, the life and career of Zsa Zsa Gabor personified that of a celebrity whose ascent to fame was due more to grabbing headlines than for any particular talent. Sister to "Green Acres" television star Eva Gabor, the future diva did pursue her own acting career and racked up a fairly impressive list of film and television credits, but she shone brightest on talk shows or within tabloid gossip pages where she delivered juicy stories about her many marriages and romantic encounters in her heavily accented and much imitated purr. She was still making news in her seventh and eighth decades - most notably for spending three days in jail after slapping a Beverly Hills traffic cop in 1989 - when she suddenly disappeared off the radar. Except for the occasional tabloid photo of a wheelchair-bound Gabor, her husband, "Prince" Frederic Prinz von Anhalt, spoke publicly on her behalf, while he made tabloid headlines of his own. Despite living a rather unorthodox life and sustaining a level of fame many felt was unjustified, Gabor sparkled brightly for over 60 years as a symbol of continental glamour and mystery.

Bonus Trivia

.

On June 14, 1989, Gabor was accused of slapping the face of a Beverly Hills police officer named Paul Kramer when he stopped her for a traffic violation. She was found guilty of the assault in a well-publicized trial and sentenced to three days (72 hours) in jail. The judge also required her to pay $13,000 in court costs. She testified that her behavior had been provoked by the officer, who she said had behaved extremely rudely and insulted her with obscenities.

.

On Nov. 27, 2002, Gabor was seriously injured in a car crash on West Hollywood's Sunset Strip. The red 1991 Chevy Camaro she was riding in smacked into a light pole after sideswiping a Corvette. The 85-year-old actress, who was not wearing a seat-belt, suffered several cuts and shattered bones in her arms, and spent at least a brief period of time unconscious. She left the hospital in early January 2003, but required continued physical therapy. Gabor sued and was awarded $2 million.

.

On July 7, 2005, Gabor suffered a massive stroke, leaving her in critical condition at a local hospital. She underwent surgery to remove a blockage in her carotid artery. She returned home on July 15. In early September 2007, she underwent surgery to deal with after-effects of her previous stroke.

.

In 2005, Gabor accused her daughter Francesca of larceny and fraud, alleging that her daughter forged her signature to get a $2 million loan on her mother's Bel Air house, and filed a lawsuit against Francesca in a California court.

.

On July 17, 2010, Gabor broke her hip in her Bel Air home after falling out of bed while reaching for the phone. An ambulance rushed her to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA after her husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, called 911. She successfully underwent hip replacement surgery two days later. Gabor returned to a Los Angeles hospital on Aug. 13 because of complications in her recuperation from hip-replacement surgery.

.

On Jan. 2, 2011, Gabor was hospitalized to undergo surgery to have part of her right leg amputated because gangrene was setting in.

.

On May 19, 2011, Gabor fell into a coma after being taken to the hospital after problems arose with a feeding tube inserted into her stomach.

.

Gabor was taken to UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center on Oct. 8, 2011 after she slipped out of consciousness. Doctors were able to stabilize her condition, but delayed stomach surgery to reattach a feeding tube due to her high fever.
