Well, another day, another remake. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has hired Ben Schwartz to write a remake of the 1991 comedy Soapdish, the ensemble satire based around the behind the scenes life on a daily soap. And, well, if you didn’t see it, Soapdish carried quite the cast: Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Whoopi Goldberg, Cathy Moriarty, Teri Hatcher, Elisabeth Shue, Carrie Fisher, and Robert Downey Jr.
It wasn’t the greatest movie, but at times, the film offers some good, genuine laughs. Plus, Soapdish provided satire on a genre that hadn’t really been mocked yet, versus nowadays where you can find satire on pretty much any subject ever with a few clicks on the internet. In short: remaking Soapdish isn’t a good idea.
That said, it’s happening, so whatever I guess. At least Paramount has the right idea with the writer they hired. Ben Schwartz — or Jean-Ralphio to Parks and Recreation fans — is an extremely talented guy. Although Soapdish will be his first feature, dude’s got quite the resume: he’s a graduate of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, spent the past few years writing for Robot Chicken and Saturday Night Live and on top of it all, he won an Emmy for co-writing Hugh Jackman’s opening number at the 81st Academy Awards.
Plus, c’mon, he’s Jean-Ralphio.
