Camper Van Beethoven frontman files class action lawsuit against Spotify

Rocker David Lowery has filed a $150 million (£100 million) class action lawsuit against bosses at music streaming service Spotify amid allegations of unpaid royalties.
The frontman of 1980s band Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker lodged papers in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California on Monday (28Dec15), claiming company officials have failed to compensate a number of artists “in an amount that is not as yet fully ascertained”. The singer estimates the figure to be at least $150 million.
The papers reveal Lowery is fighting for anyone who owns reproduction and distribution rights of copyrighted songs played on Spotify, according to TheWrap.com.
Spotify executive Jonathan Prince has since responded to the legal action, insisting the firm is “committed to paying songwriters and publishers every penny”, but notes that issues have arisen where information about the correct copyright holder is missing, wrong or incomplete.
Prince reveals Spotify chiefs are working with officials at trade group the National Music Publishers Association to rectify the problem, while they have put the royalties owed to one side until they can be paid to the correct copyright holders.
