John McCauley feared Nirvana offer was an April Fools’ Day joke

Deer Tick rocker John Mccauley was convinced he had fallen victim to an April Fools’ Day (01Apr) prank when he was invited to join the surviving members of Nirvana for a special show in New York City. The grunge band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 10 April (14) and performed with stars including Joan Jett and Lorde taking the place of late frontman Kurt Cobain.
Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic later played another show after the ceremony at a small venue in Brooklyn, with McCauley among the singers who took over vocal duties.
However, McCauley admits the special moment nearly didn’t happen as he was convinced Grohl’s offer was a prank.
He tells NME, “I got an email from Dave the day before April Fools’ Day. I thought maybe it was an early joke. But a couple of days went by and it became obvious to me that this was actually happening. Dave Grohl had actually emailed me and asked me to sing a few songs with the surviving members of Nirvana. It was a really cool opportunity to be given.”
