John Newman: ‘Career pressure almost caused mental breakdown’

John Newman has admitted that the pressures of his career almost resulted in him having a complete mental breakdown.
The Love Me Again hitmaker made the comments during an interview for Daily Star, and suggested that his fear of failure almost put an end to his musical ambitions.
“I felt I nearly had a mental breakdown from worrying about the pressures of my career and being scared of failing,” he confessed. “You want to get out (but) you gotta stand there and take it.”
Newman cited the expectation for him to keep producing hits as key to his struggles and said that he was “banging his head against the wall” trying to write new music.
He also highlighted the negative effects of social media and explained that they are heightened in the music industry, as artists are constantly pitted against their peers.
“People in the modern world have to compare themselves on Instagram (but) being an artist is that times 1,000,” Newman suggested. “It eats away at your mind.”
The 28-year-old went on to explain that, while his battle with mental health left him exhausted, he has a newfound appreciation for his accomplishments so far.
“When you come out of the backside of that you have no ego left,” the Come And Get It singer reflected. “You don’t have anything. You are as humble as it comes.”
