My Morning Jacket lead star-studded Lou Reed tribute at benefit gig

Rockers My Morning Jacket led a star-studded tribute to the late Lou Reed on Sunday (27Oct13) as they performed a cover of Velvet Underground’s Oh! Sweet Nuthin’ at Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit in California. The group returned to the Shoreline Amphitheater stage for the second night in a row to repeat their set at the annual fundraiser, but they had a slight change in tracklisting as they remembered the Velvet Underground frontman hours after news of his death broke online.
My Morning Jacket recruited the likes of Young, Elvis Costello and Jenny Lewis to join in the classic rendition, while they also reteamed with Young to perform their pitch-perfect duet on Harvest Moon.
The Reed tribute wasn’t the only highlight of the evening – headliner Tom Waits played his first show in over five years at the event and delighted fans with a 10-song set, including renditions of Singapore, Lucky Day and Cemetery Polka, before wrapping up the 50-minute performance with Come On Up to the House.
Other acts on the bill included Arcade Fire, Queens of the Stone Age, fun. and the reunion of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.
Reed died on Sunday, five months after undergoing a liver transplant.
