Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain has signed on to direct a film about self-proclaimed “American terrorist” Mark Stroman.
The Hurt Locker filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow was previously attached to direct The True American in 2014, but she will now serve solely as a producer on the project.
Tom Hardy has been cast as Stroman, who was executed in 2011 after he was found guilty of murdering two immigrants and shooting Bangladesh Air Force veteran Rais Bhuiyan in the head days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York in 2001.
The movie will be based on Anand Giridharadas’ book The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas.
