Dark blond, athletic, Alabama native Clayne Crawford initially moved west not to pursue an acting career but to play baseball for UCLA. When a knee injury ended his hopes, he took up construction work and later decided to give acting a try after noting how well-paid his pals were for their seemingly effortless appearances in commercials. Though he was turned down time and again for commercial work for four years, the actor began treading the boards in local productions including "The Bullet Proof Kid" and "Pushing Thirty". Finally Crawford's stretch of bad luck ended when he landed a lead role in the atmospheric independent drama "Gas Station Jesus" (lensed 2000). He was next featured in a guest role on the hit CBS series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" in 2001 as well as a recurring role that same year as the mysterious old flame of one of the few human teens in "Roswell" (UPN).

A supporting role in 2002's touching teen drama "A Walk to Remember" saw Crawford portraying the best friend left behind when Shane West's bad boy does a 180 and starts dating a conscientious minister's daughter. His first studio film, "A Walk to Remember" would serve as Crawford's breakthrough, while the Miramax teen stalker pic "Swimfan" (also 2002) helped to solidify the actor's status as one to watch. That fall, he was featured alongside fellow hot prospect Colin Farrell and veteran Al Pacino in the spy-themed thriller "The Farm", in effect exposing the performer to a wider audience and offering the promise of a busy career to come.
