Belying first impressions as a fragile and ultra-femme character through her convincing portrayal of a tough-skinned, street savvy cop on the gritty FX police drama “The Shield” (2002- ), Catherine Dent has proved her acting chops as a woman that can hang with the boys in the rough world of crime. And though she has garnered much street cred for her role as Officer Danielle “Danny” Sofer, Dent continues to surprise audiences with her diverse talents on both TV and film.

Dent first studied acting at the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she spent much time perfecting her craft. Immediately upon graduating, the ambitious actress landed her first gig in the 1994 feature “Nobody’s Fool” starring screen marvel Paul Newman. Soon after, Dent snatched a recurring role on the hit daytime drama “One Life To Live” (ABC, 1997), which made her a household name to avid soap watchers everywhere, while also building her portfolio in bit parts for acclaimed shows such as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (NBC, 1999), and HBO’s redefining series “The Sopranos” (1999). Dent also tested her skills on the big screen through diverse films ranging from the 2001 action flick “Replicant,” opposite Jean Claude Van Damme, and the romantic comedy “Someone Like You” (2001), alongside Ashley Judd. Dent’s exposure to various genres made her a perfect match for a spot in the 2001 romantic drama “The Majestic,” which also captured comedic veteran Jim Carrey’s first take at more serious roles. Steady work led to more opportunities for the rising star, and in 2002 Dent’s career was solidified when she won a clutch role on the sensational cop drama “The Shield,” also starring Golden Globe winner, Michael Chiklis.

Noticeably taking her career to new heights, Dent was praised by many critics, including the Hollywood Reporter for her “performance as a single woman earning a living as a cop in a world where the central organizing principle is brutal violence.” Exemplifying her staying power in Hollywood, the gifted actress delved into the world of science fiction and worked with movie legend Steven Spielberg’s in his miniseries “Taken” (Sci Fi Channel, 2002), which gives insight to the profound affects of extraterrestrials on humans. Dent was also cast in the riveting 2003 Oscar nominated indie film “21 Grams,” opposite Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro. The versatile actress even dabbled in Broadway and Regional Theatre, holding title credits for productions such as “Baby Doll,” and Lisa Peterson’s “The Country” (2003).

As much as this Louisiana-born actress’ life has changed over the years, Dent still thrives from the respect she continues to earn for her vast talents and considers her ability to affect audiences through pivotal roles as the true embodiment of her success.
