Australian character actor John Ewart spent most of his life performing on stage, radio, television, and in over 20 feature films. He was five when he made his stage debut and not much older when he first worked in radio. Ewart made his feature film debut at age 18, playing the youngest brother in Charles Chauvel's Sons of Matthew (1949). When television went down under in 1956, Ewart became the host of a live children's show that lasted eight years. He also became a popular guest on game shows and variety shows, as well as making guest-star appearances on numerous series. When not on television, he was busy on stage and furthering his film career, the pinnacle of which came when he won the Australian Film Institute's 1977 best supporting actor award for his role in The Picture Show Man. Ewart made his final film appearance in Tracks of Glory (1992), the acclaimed account of a black American cyclist living in Australia who overcomes prejudice and corruption to become a world champion.
