A prolific British stage designer whose work in operas and films served as a reminder of her diverse talents, Jocelyn Herbert was well known for her production design and costume work on such films as Ned Kelly (1970) and O Lucky Man! (1973). Born in to writer/Parliament member Alan P. Herbert in London, England, Jocelyn Herbert attended Slade School of Art and subsequently found work as a scene painter for the Royal Court Theater. Later gravitating toward a career in design, Herbert proved markedly selective in the projects she worked on. She contributed to the sets and costumes of such high-profile productions as the New York Metropolitan production of Lulu and such Royal Court productions as Chairs and Roots. Later moving into film work as a color consultant for 1963's Tom Jones, Herbert would go on to design costumes for such features as Othello (1965), Ned Kelly (1970), and The Hotel New Hampshire (1984). Likewise, Herbert's stage experience lent itself well to production design work on If... (1968), Hamlet (1969), and The Whales of August (1987), among others. Herbert's final credit as a production designer was on the 1998 film Prometheus. On May 6, 2003, Jocelyn Herbert died in her hometown of London. She was 86.
