American author Bruce Manning came to Hollywood when his novel Party Wire was filmed by Columbia in 1935. The following year, Manning joined Universal, where he scripted several high-grossing Deanna Durbin musicals. In 1941, he was promoted to producer, overseeing such Universal prestige items as Back Street (1941) and Broadway (1942). He took a one-time-only flyer at directing in 1943, helming the Deanna Durbin starrer The Amazing Mrs. Holliday. Active until 1952, Bruce Manning worked as producer and screenwriter for a variety of studios, including RKO, Paramount, Columbia and Republic.
