Active from 1938 to 1966, American screenwriter Stanley Roberts got his start with Republic's B-Westerns. Roberts went on to films of all genres, especially comedy-mysteries like Abbott and Costello's Who Done It? (1942) and MGM's Song of the Thin Man (1947). Called before the HUAC in 1947 because of his prior involvement in the American Communist Party, Roberts elected to be a "friendly witness," naming 29 of his fellow Hollywoodites as "Reds" or Red sympathizers. Even so, he had trouble finding work until he was "rescued" by producer Stanley Kramer in 1952. Among Stanley Roberts' credits for Kramer was 1954's Caine Mutiny, for which he shared an Oscar nomination.
