A handsome, dark-haired actor who made a big impression playing Matthew, the friend of Hugh Grant's who loses his gay lover (Simon Callow), in "Four Weddings and a Funeral" (1994), John Hannah received a BAFTA Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work and his bookings have not stopped since. After working as an electrician for four years (a "lazy one" by his own admission) he decided to give acting a whirl. Hannah made his film debut in a small role in "Harbour Beat" (1990). After his success in "Weddings", he landed his first screen lead as a gay man with a large birthmark who withdraws from society by living on a beach in his car in the art-house pic "Madagascar Skin" (1995). Hannah also starred in two 1995 British TV series "McCallum" (ITV), as a forensic pathologist living and working in the underbelly of London's East End, and "Out of the Blue" (BBC), as a Yorkshire police detective. Hannah also worked alongside famed British actor Michael Gambon in the four-part "Faith" for Central TV and won plaudits as a psychopath in the BBC movie "Truth or Dare" (1996).

One the big screen, the busy actor went on to ponder if love existed in "Romance and Rejection" (1997). Hannah was one leg of a triangle involving Gwyneth Paltrow and John Lynch in "Sliding Doors" (1998), co-starred as Helen McCrory's deserting husband in the woman-on-the-run drama "The James Gang" (1997) and had a small role in the murder mystery "Resurrection Man" (1998). He made an attempt to crack the US TV market with a major role in the small screen remake of "The Love Bug" (ABC, 1997).

Taking into account the pre-millennial craze suffered by shifty audiences coast to coast, Hollywood is taking a low-key, market-testing approach to the week's more recognizable releases. The Denzel Washington vehicle "The Hurricane" will m...
