Expand Full Bio
Italian film editor Ruggero Mastroianni worked closely with some of his country's finest directors, including Federico Fellini, Francesco Rosi, Lina Wertmuller, Luchino Visconti, and his older brother, Marcello Mastroianni. He edited his first feature, Enzo Provenzale's Vento del Sud, in 1959. Mastroianni occasionally worked as an actor, primarily for director Luigi Magni in such films as Scipione Detto Ance l'Africano (1970), where he performed opposite his brother, Marcello Mastroianni, Vittorio Gassman, and Silvana Mangano. Mastroianni has edited almost every Fellini film since Juliet of the Spirits (1965). Other Fellini films cut by Mastroianni include City of Women, Amarcord, and Satyricon. The editor has also worked closely with Rosi since Uomini Contro (1970). It was while working on Rosi's version of author Primo Levi's WWII chronicle The Truce that Mastroianni died of a heart attack.
