In the 1980s, only news junkies and insomniacs may have known Charlie Rose who was then host of "CBS News Nightwatch" which aired on weeknights from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. But in the 90s, the gentlemanly Rose went national with his own late-night talk show, first for syndication and The Learning Channel, and then for PBS, and in the process offered viewers some celebrities, to be sure, but more often the newsmakers and thinkers of both the USA and the world. The typical PBS "Charlie Rose" hour, which airs Monday-Friday, has three 20-minute interviews. Occasionally, the show will consist of a roundtable discussion on a particular subject. During a given week one might find Michael J Fox discussing why he returned to sitcoms, an African ambassador discussing issues from that continent, and a panel on the chances of a budget deal in Washington. Because of the eclectic makeup of the panels, his show has been deemed It is why Rose's "cerebral" by some and "the thinking man's talk show" by others. A distinguished and very Southern presence, Rose approaches issues as a devil's advocate or makes an inquiry into the why of a matter, rarely instigating arguments with or among his guest. His own views may be moderate, certainly tolerant. His voice remains calm, his questions sometimes long-winded, but with his handsome looks and a dash of gray hair, Rose project the demeanor of someone you'd like to spend dinner with sipping wine and discussing current affairs. After completing his law studies at Duke, he moved to New York to pursue a career in banking. In 1972, Rose began his TV career as an on camera interviewer at WPIX in New York. Within two years, he had become affiliated with another thoughtful Southerner, Bill Moyers, first as managing editor of "Bill Moyers' International Report" (PBS, 1974) and later as executive producer of "Bill Moyers' Journal" (PBS, 1975). Rose returned before the cameras as a political correspondent for NBC News in 1976. He went on to host the ABC-owned "A.M./Chicago" (the show that eventually became "The Oprah Winfrey Show") in 1978 and the following year hosted the Texas-produced "The Charlie Rose Show". By 1984, Rose had become an anchor at "CBS News Nightwatch", earning an Emmy for an interview with the notorious killer Charles Manson. In addition, he contributed reports to other network news programming like "Face the Nation" and "48 Hours".

Rose briefly hosted "Entertainment Daily Journal" (Fox, 1990) but it was not to his liking. He launched Rose Communications and produced and hosted a syndicated talk/discussion show that was also seen on The Learning Channel. After a year, the show moved over to PBS, produced by WNET in NYC. The local station's financial crunch almost ended the show in 1994 but Rose assumed overall production of the series and it has flourished since, earning him a second News Emmy in 1992.
