A rising young British leading man with sensitive eyes and a mischievous boyish quality, Sam West (who has also performed under his full name, Samuel West) first won attention as Konradin, the pampered German aristocratic teen who becomes best friends with a Jewish lad, then is seduced by Hitler and the Nazi movement in "Reunion" (1989). He first began acting, on a limited scale with a small role in the 1979 BBC series "Nanny" but did not begin his career in earnest until graduating from Oxford in 1988. After several years working on stage, he again won critical acclaim as Leonard Best in the Merchant-Ivory production "Howards End", the 1992 adaptation of the E.M. Forster novel of class conflict in 1910 England. West followed as the caddish Mr. Elliot in "Persuasion", based on Jane Austen's final novel, and as Gerald, lover in the middle of a most unusual marriage in "Carrington" (both 1995). West made his American TV debut with a small role in "Danielle Steel's 'Zoya'" (NBC, 1995) and was seen as a cross-dresser in an episode of the HBO series "Strangers" (1996). He is the son of actors Timothy West and Prunella Scales.
