In 1972, she was cast in the more worthwhile role of Lady Thiang in Anna and the King (1972), the short-lived TV series adaptation of The King and I. A dauntingly versatile character actress by the 1980s, Lu racked up several impressive film and TV credits, including her chilling portrayal of the Dowager Empress in The Last Emperor (1987) and her moving performance as natural-born "survivor" An Mei in The Joy Luck Club (1993). In 1994, Lisa Lu served as narrator of the documentary China: Beyond the Clouds.
