Entered the pre-med program at Memphis State University but discovered a passion for theater and transferred to the arts program.

After college, took a job as a law-firm secretary while searching for acting auditions.

Made onscreen debut in the 1979 movie version of Hair, and worked again with its director Milos Forman in the film Ragtime (1981).
