Award-winning TV director who made his feature debut with the concert documentary, "Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl" (1982) and his first fictional feature, the supernatural comedy, "The Butcher's Wife" in 1991. Hughes began his career with the BBC in his native England where he served as a producer and director for 17 years and as head of entertainment for two; his British comedy series include "Ripping Yarns" and "The Two Ronnies." Hughes moved to the United States in 1980 and has subsequently specialized in directing comedy series including "The Golden Girls" (1985-90), "Square Pegs" (1982), "Mr. Mom" (1984), "Chicken Soup" (1989) and "Good and Evil" (1991); he has also directed superb adaptations of stage plays including "Hughie" (1984) and "The Gin Game" (1986) and the Stephen Sondheim musicals "Sweeney Todd" (1982) and "Sunday in the Park With George" (1986).
