In later years Signoret grew convincingly into more matronly roles, contributing a memorable, Oscar-nominated turn opposite Oskar Werner in Stanley Kramer's classy soap-opera, "Ship of Fools" (1965). Late in life she offered a bravura performance as "Madame Rosa" (1977), an Auschwitz survivor who cares for the children of prostitutes. Mother, by husband Yves Allegret, of actress Catherine Allegret, and later married to Yves Montand.
