Andre Previn was a child prodigy who began piano studies in his native Germany at the age of six. With the rise of the Nazis, he and his family fled to Paris in 1938 and to the USA the following year. Previn's father's cousin, Charles Previn, worked as a musical director at Universal Studios, so the family settled in Los Angeles. Eventually, Andre Previn landed at MGM, where he worked as an orchestrator and composer. He won four Oscars for his orchestrations on such swank, effervescent musicals as "Gigi" (1958), "Porgy and Bess" (1959), "Irma La Douce" (1963) and "My Fair Lady" (1964). From the late 1960s onward, he has mostly concentrated on a career as an orchestra music director, working with such world-class symphonies as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has guest conducted around the world.
