A native of Southern California, Lisa Cholodenko began her career in film as a post-production assistant on John Singleton's acclaimed "Boys N the Hood" (1991). After work as an assistant editor on such films as "The Lawnmower Man" and "Used People" (both 1992), she moved to NYC to attend graduate school. While at Columbia University, Cholodenko was mentored by Milos Forman and wrote, produced and directed two widely seen short films, "Souvenir" (1994) and "dinner party" (1996), both of which involved lesbian themes. With her first feature "High Art" (1998), the filmmaker explored a budding same-sex romance set amid the art and publishing worlds, the vagaries of fame and the compromises exacted by success. Cholodenko received the Waldo Salt Screenwriting award at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival and garnered particular praise for her direction of a cast that included Ally Sheedy as a heroin-addicted photographer, Patricia Clarkson as her German lover and Radha Mitchell as an ambitious magazine staffer.
