Canadian composer Mychael Danna has been scoring films since his 1987 feature debut on Atom Egoyan's "Family Viewing" earned him the first of his many Genie Award nominations. His frequent collaborations with Egoyan include "Speaking Parts" (1989), "The Adjustor" (1991), "Montreal Vu Par . . ." (1991), a Genie Award-winning score for "Exotica" (1994) and "The Sweet Hereafter" (1997). Able to incorporate his interest in Middle Eastern and South Asian music into "Exotica", Danna then pushed his fascination with combining non-Western sound sources with electronics, minimalism and manipulation to a further limit in Mira Nair's "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love" (1997). For John Greyson's feature "Lilies" (1996), he explored an entirely different realm, writing a Latin vocal mass exhibiting Gregorian and other early music influences, performed by England's premiere male choir The Hilliard Ensemble. Danna also completed scores for Gillies MacKinnon's "Regeneration" and Ang Lee's "The Ice Storm" (both 1997), using Native American flute player Dan Cecil Hill for the latter in concert with the Evergreen Gamelan Ensemble to portray the forces of nature at work during the 70s in suburban Connecticut.
