Received the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor in 1943 for his roles in The Ox-Bow Incident (the work he is said to be most proud of) and Happy Land.
Worked with Jack Webb in several projects in the '50s and the two stayed in contact. When Webb revived Dragnet in the '60s, he called on Morgan to costar with him.
Prior to joining M*A*S*H in 1975 as Col. Potter, he guest starred in a hilarious 1974 episode as lunatic Maj. Gen. Bartford Hamilton Steele.
