Aside from this peccadillo, Safer has consistently turned out excellent broadcast journalism: he toured Vietnam on several occasions and won more than a few Emmys for his profiles of personalities and politicians (notably 1985's "Ronald Reagan--The Movie" and "Teddy Kolleck's Jerusalem" in 1979). If perhaps less flashy than co-star Mike Wallace, Safer has proven to be no less tenacious in pursuing a story, and his droll gentlemanly reserve has played an equally prominent role in establishing the tone of "60 Minutes". As one-fourth of what has been, for many years, the most popular primetime news show on TV, Safer, for better or worse, is of the dwindling number of media reporters who aim to uncover "the truth". The chain-smoking, crusty, and intelligent correspondent is Canadian, a provenance that led to his only screen appearance in "The Canadian Conspiracy" (1986).
