Began his career in 1934 as a camera loader and lighting camera operator and graduated to cinematographer in 1958. Lathrop proved himself a meticulous craftsman with films such as "The Cincinnati Kid" (1965), "Point Blank" (1967) and the period piece "They Shoot Horses, Don't They" (1969) and shot several of the big-budget, spectacular "disaster" films favored by Hollywood in the 1970s, receiving an Oscar nomination for "Earthquake" (1974).

In 1959 he began a productive collaboration with director Blake Edwards, lensing his "Perfect Furlough" (1959) and six other features including "Experiment in Terror", "Days of Wine and Roses" (both 1962), "The Pink Panther" (1964) and "Gunn" (1967). Lathrop also shot Edwards's TV series "Peter Gunn" and "Mr. Lucky". The two-time Oscar nominee won Emmy awards for "Malice in Wonderland" (1984) and "Christmas Snow" (1985).
