British filmmaker who began his career as an editor for the BBC. Jackson started directing with the British documentaries "The Ascent of Man", "The Age of Uncertainty" and "Connections". He received his start in narrative films with "Threads", a critically acclaimed 1984 English TV movie dealing with the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. This led to more work in British television, including the heralded miniseries "A Very British Coup" (1989). Jackson made his American feature debut with the dark comedy "Chattahoochee" (1990) starring Gary Oldman. Subsequent feature work includes the gentle and offbeat "L.A. Story" (1991) with Steve Martin and "The Bodyguard" (1992), which paired Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. After "The Bodyguard"'s tremendous success, Jackson directed "Clean Slate" (1994), a comedy caper featuring Dana Carvey as an amnesiac detective in a variation on the plot of "Groundhog Day" (1993).
