American cinematographer Joseph La Shelle originally trained to be an electrical engineer before joining the film industry in 1924 as a lab assistant. One year later, he was promoted to assistant cameraman at Fox where he worked on such distinguished films as How Green Was My Valley (1941) and The Song of Bernadette (1943). La Shelle is noted for his facility with both black-and-white and color film. In 1944 he won an Oscar for his work on Laura. He continued filming until the late 1960s.
