Flamboyant pianist and entertainer famous for his carefully waved hair, pearly smile, outlandish jewelry and costumes, breathy, insinuating speech, and his showy playing style on the ivories. Liberace first attained his great popularity with middle-aged and older women during the early 1950s; although the one attempt to make him a movie star (1955's "Sincerely Yours") failed, he starred in several variety series which made him a great deal of money. His lush recordings of easy-listening instrumental music sold millions over the years, and he was a great favorite of Las Vegas stage shows. Liberace also starred in a number of TV variety specials in which he proved himself an accomplished camp, delightedly showing off his diamond piano rings--"Why not show them off? After all you paid for them"--and not caring a fig for the snipes of critics--"I cried all the way to the bank."

As with other entertainers such as Elton John or David Bowie who turned out to be gay or bisexual, Liberace was able to flaunt himself to the fullest because even some of his more conservative fans enjoyed his music and wit and only considered his escapades as part of his glitzy star persona. Late in life, however, his public disputes with longtime companion Scott Thorson effectively "outed" him, and his death from AIDS complications and the books and TV-movies about his unique, fascinating life revealed some of the private joys and sorrows of the ever-smiling, self-mocking, florid entertainer.
