German-born cinematographer Erwin Hillier moved to Britain at the age of 18. Fluent in English, Hillier found few obstacles in working up the ranks in the British film industry. His first "director of photography" credit was on 1942's The Lady from Lisbon; three years later, Hillier was embraced by the critics for his moody, storm-swept camerawork for I Know Where I'm Going (1945). Erwin Hillier's best-known project of the '50s was the immensely successful wartime actioner The Dam Busters (1955); he remained much in demand until his retirement in 1969.
