American cinematographer Loyal Griggs won an Academy Award for his second director-of-photography effort, Shane (1953). Before this triumph, Griggs had worked with Paramount's special effects department, a job he'd started as a teenager. He remained at Paramount even during his post-Shane career, photographing such VistaVision treats as White Christmas (1954), The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1954), and The Ten Commandments (1956); he was also up to the challenge of making Jerry Lewis photogenic in films like The Sad Sack (1957) and Visit to a Small Planet (1960). Free-lancing from 1963 onward, Loyal Griggs kept busy until his retirement in 1971; his last film credit was the Bette Davis/Ernest Borgnine vehicle Bunny O'Hare (1971).
