He was in his late teens when he made his screen debut in Pardonnez nos Offences (1956). In 1993, Frey garnered considerable critical acclaim for his portrayal of mad actor, poet, and theorist Antonin Artaud in En Compagnie d'Antonin Artaud (1993).
