Dryburgh has contributed to the budding New Zealand cinema as a director of photography for three noteworthy projects. The cinematographer for the fine short film "Kitchen Sink" (1989) and the esteemed Jane Campion productions, "An Angel at My Table" (1990) and "The Piano" (1993). Dryburgh garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Cinematography for "The Piano," a film which well utilized the talents evinced in his other efforts, attaining intimacy, densely metaphoric frames and provocatively accented colors.
