Although this witty sophisticate started out as a singer and actress, she became famous as a sparkling small-screen personality on game shows such as To Tell the Truth, and graduated to legend as a staunch supporter of the arts. Born in the U.S. but raised and educated in Europe, Carlisle began her career on stage, making her Broadway debut in 1933 in the Die Fledermaus-inspired operetta Champagne, Sec. (34 years later, she made her Metropolitan Opera debut playing the same role in the actual Johann Strauss opera.) Attractive, slim and impeccably coiffed and clad, she made the inevitable trip to Hollywood, where she appeared in handful of films, notably Here Is My Heart and She Loves Me Not, both opposite crooner Bing Crosby, and in the Marx Brothers' A Night at the Opera. But it was soon clear that movies were not her medium, and she returned to the stage to enjoy moderate success. In 1946 she married Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Moss Hart and the two became the darlings of the New York society set, hosting lavish parties and hobnobbing with artists and the intelligentsia. The advent of television provided a new opportunity for Carlisle as she became a perennial panelist on shows like I've Got a Secret, What's My Line? and all five incarnations of To Tell the Truth, from the '50s through the '00s. In 1976, she began a 20-year stint as chairperson of the New York State Council and proved herself a tireless advocate of the performing arts. She continued performing herself well past retirement age. During her twilight years she was a cabaret attraction, bringing her story-filled solo shows to the swankiest rooms. When she died of heart failure at age 96, she still had bookings scheduled.
