French filmmaker Alain Cavalier started out assisting Edouard Molinaro and Louis Malle. In 1958 he directed his first solo film Un American, a featurette. He made his first full-length feature in 1962, Le Combat dans I'lle. The critical and commercial reception to the film was lukewarm. His most famous film is the Catherine Deneuve vehicle La Chamade (1968).
