French director, screenwriter and producer Claude Bernard-Aubert is known for creating controversial, socially conscious films. Before entering cinema, he was a photo-journalist in the French army during the Indochina campaigns. Afterward he stayed in Vietnam to make newsreels. His first film was a battle diary comprised of his newsreel footage. Patrouille de Choc (1957) presented such a realistic, horrible view of the conflict, that the French censors banned it from exportation.
