In film, author William Wister Haines primarily penned screenplays for such action-adventure films as The Eternal Sea and The Racket. As a novelist he made his debut with Slim which, in 1931, he adapted into a film of the same name starring Henry Fonda and Pat O'Brien. As playwright, Haines is best known for the Broadway success Command Decision (1947). The year after it was first produced, the play was adapted into a film starring Clark Gable.
