Expand Full Bio
An Oscar nominated special effects artist whose photographic and matte effects could be seen in such films as Helen of Troy (1956) and Flash Gordon (1980), Louis Lichtenfield also worked as executive vice president and CEO of Universal Studios' commercial industrial film division in the 1970s. With experience as an Air Force photographer predating his work in the film industry, Lichtenfield returned from the military to craft a special effects career that began with work on the 1954 feature The Silver Chalice. Subsequent work on 1957's The Spirit of St. Louis earned Lichtenfield an Academy award nomination for Best Special Effects, though the following years' No Time for Sergeants would prove that last of his work in that capacity. Though he would no longer work in special effects as he used to, the late 1970s and early 80s found Lichtenfield back in action with matte work for such visually extravagant films as King Kong (1976) and Flash Gordon (1980). On September 12, 2003 Louis Lichtenfield succumbed to cancer in his Los Angeles home. He was 84.
