Distinguished South African author Alan Paton is best known internationally as the author of the incendiary anti-apartheid novel Cry the Beloved Country. In 1953, the book became a film of the same name. That year, Paton founded the South African Liberal Party and became its first president. The government forced the party's demise in 1969. Paton continued writing, though, and penned three more novels and numerous political essays as well as an autobiography.
