American author Wallace Smith is best known today for his "hard-bitten reporter" novel The Captain Hates the Sea, which was filmed in 1934 as actor John Gilbert's final starring vehicle. Smith's own film career began in 1927, when he was brought in as story consultant for Douglas Fairbanks' The Gaucho (1927). He made his talking-picture debut as one of the screenwriters for Sam Goldwyn's 1929 version of Bulldog Drummond. From 1930 to 1935, Wallace Smith was most closely associated with RKO Radio Pictures.
