Born in Warsaw, Poland, to cinematographer Witold Sobocinski, one might rightfully assume that Piotr Sobocinski was destined to follow in the footsteps of his father's successful and extended career.
Educated at the State Theatrical and Film College in Ludoz, Sobocinski developed and refined his cinematic abilities through a fruitful and long-running collaboration with filmmaker Krzysztof Kieslowski, for whom he would lens a number of the director's successful works, including Dekalog (1987) and the popular Three Colors: Red (1994). Working mainly in the U.S. after shooting The Seventh Room (1995), Sobocinski lensed a number of popular American films in the late '90s, including Ron Howard's Ransom and Marvin's Room (both 1996). His career was cut tragically short when he suffered a fatal heart attack while filming Luis Mandoki's Angel Eyes in Vancouver, British Columbia, in March 2001. Sobocinski's final work to be released was Hearts of Atlantis, the film he had finished shooting prior to beginning work on Angel Eyes.
