Jack Standing

From a prominent British acting dynasty that also included Wyndham Standing and Sir Guy Standing, handsome, debonair Jack Standing had appeared on Broadway in such musical comedy hits as The Belle of New York and Floradora prior to entering films with the Biograph company in 1909. He became a star with the Philadelphia-based Lubin Mfg. Company in 1911 and later signed a contract with Fox. Like most of his generation of film actors, Standing would be asked to play anything from heavies to juvenile leads to old man characters and seemed to enjoy versatility. "Spare me from being a one-type actor," he told the trade paper Moving Picture World in 1915. Today, Standing is perhaps best remembered for playing Clara Williams' weak-willed brother in the 1916 William S. Hart Western Hell's Hinges. Sadly, his burgeoning career was cut tragically short when he succumbed to pneumonia at the young age of 31.
