Heidi Montag was born on Sept. 15, 1986 in Crested Butte, CO. She became an “instant celebrity” - like several other young people in Hollywood – simply by going out and promoting nightclubs, shopping in trendy Robertson Blvd. boutiques, and getting photographed by tabloid magazines like US Weekly and In Touch. She made her television debut in the second season of “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County” (MTV, 2004-05) because of her friendship with Conrad. When the spin-off show “The Hills” was created, Montag moved into a Los Angeles apartment with Conrad, and thus, became a series regular. Both girls attended the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, but Montag dropped out in 2005 to become an intern at Bolthouse Productions, where she was eventually promoted to event planner within two years.
The first season of “The Hills” focused more on Conrad, but Montag seemed unwilling to take a backseat to her friend and roommate. The drama between the two escalated in the second season of the show, fueled by the appearance of Spencer Pratt, a Hollywood nightlife regular and Montag’s new equally blonde boyfriend. By the end of the second season, the friendship between the former roommates had ended, especially after Montag and Pratt moved in together and, it was said, started a rumor that Conrad had made a sex tape with an ex-boyfriend.
In the midst of the ridiculously awkward scenarios created by its stars, MTV jumped on the chance of making a third season of “The Hills,” with a separate storyline for Montag and Pratt’s tumultuous relationship. The two announced their engagement in May 2007, even though audiences believed it was purely made up for the show. A month later, Montag made tabloid headlines again for admitting she underwent breast augmentation and rhinoplasty. By December 2007, the relationship had soured even more, and the couple broke off their engagement. “The bottom line is that we love each other,” Montag said in April 2008. “We’re just trying to figure out our stuff like every other couple.”
Even with the success of “The Hills,” Montag still explored her dream of becoming a singer. She announced that she was working on an album with super producer David Foster in February 2007, yet more than a year later, she still had not released a record. The reality TV star debuted a couple of singles during Ryan Seacrest’s radio morning show, including “Body Language,” “Higher,” and “No More” – all of them receiving negative critical and commercial response. A month after her TV nemesis Conrad debuted a collection at Los Angeles Fashion Week, Montag released her own clothing line for Anchor Blue Clothing Company called “Heidiwood.” The line debuted at a fashion show held at the Hollywood and Highland complex in downtown Hollywood in April 2008. That same month, Montag announced her support for Republican Presidential candidate John McCain, even though she had not registered to vote due to her “busy schedule.”
