Full Biography (Back to top)

This British born executive began his career in 1962 when he joined Associated British Cinemas (the forerunner of EMI) as an assistant manager in exhibition. Two years later, Gibson began a ten- year association with the commercial distribution firm of Pearl & Dean. He also worked in various capacities (assistant director, production manager, etc.) on feature films produced in Asia, Africa and throughout Europe. By 1975, Gibson had moved to Los Angeles and worked as a producer for Sandy Howard Productions and spent one year as head of production at Astral Bellevue Pathe in Canada. Returning to the US, Gibson joined Hemdale Film Corporation in 1982 as head of production, eventually becoming its president. Among the films on which he served as either producer or executive producer are James Cameron's "The Terminator" (1984), Oliver Stone's "Salvador" and "Platoon" (both 1986), Tim Hunter's "River's Edge" (1987) and Kenneth Loach's "Hidden Agenda" (1990).

Trouble arose in 1992 when Hemdale Releasing Corp., a subsidiary, was forced into bankruptcy and triggered a complete corporate restructuring. Hemdale Film Corp. was renamed and both Gibson and its founder John Daly were forced to resign. Three years later, both resigned from Hemdale Communications. The pair entered into a three- year, non-exclusive production deal with the reorganized Hemdale.
