A Michigan native who moved to Arizona in 1959, Swarthout wrote more than 20 novels and many short stories, plays and film scripts. Films adapted from his work include Stanley Kramer's "Bless the Beasts & Children" (1971), "Where the Boys Are" (1960), Robert Rossen's "They Came to Cordura" (1959) and Don Siegel's "The Shootist" (1976), an affecting swan song for the Western starring John Wayne in his final film role. Swarthout's novel, "The Melodeon" was adapted by Stewart Stern for "A Christmas to Remember" (1978), a sentimental TV movie set during the Depression starring Jason Robards, Eva Marie Saint and Joanne Woodward....
